A private prison firm sued California over its ban on private prisons. Effective January 1, 2020, California banned any new or renewed contracts for private prisons in the state, including immigration detention centers. Many immigrants in custody have died in the private prisons. A private prison firm say that the law would unlawfully undermine the enforcement of both criminal and immigration law.? California?s law unlawfully regulates the actions of the federal government. ICE currently has 4 detention centers in California, all of which are privately operated.
