ICE has suspended social visits

- Seattle?s immigration court has closed, while others have stayed open. Seattle?s immigration court was temporarily closed last week after a report of someone exposed to COVID-19. The court will remain closed until April 10. Outside of Seattle, all immigration courts remain generally open, though master calendar hearings have been postponed. Immigration judges, lawyers, and advocates continue to call for the closing of all immigration courts at this time.
- ICE has suspended social visits at detention centers. On March 13, ICE announced that all social visits to detention centers would be temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure against COVID-19. Immigration detainees are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks of disease because of their close quarters and often compounding health issues. ICE has reported that there are 0 cases of COVID-19 in ICE detention centers so far.
- The Florida legislature passed a weakened version of the E-verify bill. On March 12, both houses of the Florida legislature passed an E-verify bill and will now send the bill to Governor DeSantis. This version of the bill has lost some of its enforcement ?teeth? in the back-and-forth between the House and Senate. One provision that was removed would have allowed Florida to randomly audit businesses that opt out of the federal E-verify system. The final bill requires businesses to either use E-verify or keep a 3-year record of documents used in an applicant?s I-9 form. Governor DeSantis is for the E-verify legislation but had initially pressured the legislature into sending a bill with more enforcement.
