- DHS has temporarily changed H-2A rules to minimize disruption of agriculture caused by the coronavirus pandemic. On April 15, DHS announced a temporary final rule changing certain H-2A requirements. Under the rule, an H-2A petitioner who is concerned that workers will not be able to enter the U.S. may employ H-2A workers in the United States immediately after USCIS receives the H-2A petition. The worker must already have valid H-2A status and be in the U.S. and may not start working before the start date of employment listed on the petition. DHS is also allowing H-2A workers to stay beyond the current 3-year maximum stay.
- California will distribute $500 in coronavirus aid to undocumented immigrants. On Wednesday, Governor Newsom announced that California will give a one-time payment of $500 to each undocumented immigrant adult, with a cap of $1000 per household. The aid is in response to the economic strain caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Approximately 150,000 undocumented immigrants will be aided by these payments. The payments will be funded by the state?s Disaster Relief Fund.
- Deportations from the U.S. are driving up COVID-19 cases in Guatemala. According to Guatemala?s health minister, flights arriving with deportees from the U.S. have increased the amount of confirmed cases of COVID-19. In one flight, 50-75% of deportees tested positive for the coronavirus. Additionally, the U.S. has allegedly been non compliant with a request to have only 25 passengers per plane.
