Suit to Stop Expanded Public Charge Rule
- Coronavirus cases have halted U.S. deportee flights to Guatemala. Last Monday, 44 out of 76 passengers on a flight of Guatemalan deportees tested positive for COVID-19 after arrival to Guatemala. By April 19, immigrant advocates reported that the hunger strike had grown to include hundreds of immigrant detainees across California. However, ICE officials countered, saying that only 2 detainees are protesting at Adelanto, and none at any other facility. ICE policy dictates that staff must record detainees not eating for 72 hours before designating a hunger strike.
- CBP officers are demanding more protective gear during the coronavirus pandemic. The president of the National Treasury Employees Union Chapter 105, which represents nearly 4000 CBP employees in the San Diego sector, has demanded more masks, gloves, and goggles for employees. The union is also seeking more testing kits. This is because of the amount of daily interaction that CBP employees see at the border and the fear of spreading COVID-19 to their families. In a public letter, the national president of the same union had similar concerns. To ensure more distance between employees at work, the letter asked CBP to adjust work schedules and reduce staffing temporarily.
