ICE detainee has died of COVID-19
- A judge?s order to release detainees over coronavirus concerns at one detention center has been put on hold. On April 23, one judge ordered the Adelanto ICE Processing Center to reduce the number of detainees in custody to implement social distancing guidelines. On May 5, the 9th Circuit ruled that the ICE facility must implement CDC guidelines, but put the requirement to lower the detained population on hold. Adelanto has had minimal COVID-19 testing thus far.
- An ICE detainee has died of COVID-19. On May 6, an immigrant in ICE custody passed away due to COVID-19 complications. The 57-year-old was located in Southern California and was the first known death from the coronavirus in ICE custody.
- Border patrol is soliciting private contractors to handle detainee meals. CBP is creating a new meal program to handle the unexpected surges of detainees that happen all along the U.S.-Mexico border. CBP is soliciting bids from contractors for the five-year program, which would cost up to $210 million. As CBP and ICE have frequently been criticized for the quality and nutrition of the food provided to detainees, CBP emphasized that any contractor would need to meet ?stringent and mandated USDA/FDA nutritional and food handling guidelines.?
