Many immigrants will be unable to vote in the 2020 election
- Delays in the naturalization process mean that many immigrants will be unable to vote in the 2020 election. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, all naturalization ceremonies and interviews have stopped, and USCIS has not indicated that it will consider any remote alternatives. So far, tens of thousands of immigrants have been affected, and postponed ceremonies and interviews continue to pile up. For each day USCIS remains closed, 2100 immigrants will run out of time to vote in this year?s election. Advocates have noted that there is no reason why ceremonies and interviews cannot happen via video conferencing, since many other government processes do.
- Changes in ?Remain in Mexico? hearings have caused confusion at the border. In the evening of May 10, the Trump administration sent out an update announcing the further postponement of hearings for asylum seekers waiting in Mexico, along with a change in procedure on how to get new hearing dates. Previously, asylum seekers were told to report to the border on their original hearing date to be assigned a new one. The new procedure is that asylum seekers must go to the border one month after their originally assigned date. This change has caused confusion: many asylum seekers were not alerted to the change at all, while others were unsure what it meant and made the trip to the border anyway. Though the change is supposed to mean asylum seekers don?t have to travel during the pandemic, attorneys say that many will now make the trip twice in an attempt to receive a new date: on their original hearing date and then one month after
- The federal government has not mandated any safety guidelines for farmworkers amid COVID-19. Farmworkers are considered essential workers during the pandemic. To protect essential workers, the CDC has published recommended guidelines for employers during this crisis. However, the Trump administration has not made these guidelines mandatory, nor has the CDC released guidelines specific to field workers. Advocates for both immigrants and workers in general say this puts farm workers at increased risk. While some employers are voluntarily keeping up with safety guidelines, this is not consistent or guaranteed across the industry.
- Conservationists have sued the Trump administration over the border wall. On May 12, a coalition of conservation groups sued the Trump administration, arguing 1) that the transfer of military funds to the border wall was unconstitutional, and 2) that the administration did not have the authority to waive certain environmental regulations relating to the wall. DHS decided in March to waive the requirement of environmental impact statements, as well as other environmental requirements. The suit also notes the effect that construction will have on endangered species, the gray wolf and jaguar.
