- USCIS will resume services on June 4. After long closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, some USCIS offices are preparing to reopen to the public on June 4. The change was made after New York began allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver?s licenses.
- ICE has transferred detainees during the pandemic without testing. In a federal court hearing on May 27, ICE admitted that it is not testing all detainees before transferring them to other facilities. ICE policy is currently to test detainees with symptoms, which may have already led to the transfer of asymptomatic detainees. The admission was made during a hearing regarding a temporary order to reduce the detainee population in South Florida immigration detention centers. Judge Cooke clarified in the hearing that the purpose of her order was not to encourage transfers, but rather reduce the detained population to limit transmission risks. She is expected to decide whether to extend the order within seven days.
- Nonprofits in Clark County have raised relief funds to help Latino families during the pandemic. The Southwest Washington League of Latin American Citizens council has raised more than $300,000 for local families in need. The goal is to assist families in the Clark County, Washington area with funding for rent, food, and other necessities. The council has also provided pro bono lawyers to help with evictions. LULAC hopes to extend its outreach to other counties as well.
